US warships move into E. Mediterranean in case Gaza escalation spills over into Lebanon

Egyptian Gen. Suleiman cancels Israel visit

Friday, Feb. 29, Egypt’s intelligence minister Omar Suleiman canceled his visit to Israel because of estimates in Cairo that hectic preparations current in Israel and the Gaza Strip augur a steep escalation of cross-border violence.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report: Officials in Cairo expect Israel redouble its air bombardment and armored raids against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, and Hamas to intensify and broaden the scope of its missile and rocket attacks on Israeli towns and villages.

Both sides are convinced that a further ratcheting-up of the war will generate indirect truce talks through a third party.

The US has meanwhile posted naval and marine vessels opposite the shores of Israel and Lebanon in case the fighting spreads to a second front. DEBKAfile’s Washington sources quote US and Israeli military sources as skeptical of the chances that prime minister Ehud Olmert and defense minister Ehud Barak will secure a ceasefire. The Gaza conflagration is more likely, they believe, to stir Hizballah to ignite a fresh assault from South Lebanon.

These sources point to four significant developments to watch for:

1. Hizballah is adamant about avenging the death of its military commander Imad Mughniyeh by border strikes against Israel and terrorist attacks inside the country. This Iranian front group is also committed to helping Hamas. The end of the 40 days of mourning for Mughniyeh on March 22-23 is anxiously awaited.

2. Israel is braced for this eventuality and in mid-preparation for its army to turn the tables on a Hizballah assault and carry the war into Lebanon.

US intelligence sources note that last week, the IDF deployed Patriot missile defense batteries around Haifa in case Hizballah unleashes a rocket offensive on the North as in 2005.

Our sources also report that local authorities and private security firms responsible for public safety in northern Israel were instructed to inspect bomb shelters and ascertain they were ready for use by March 10.

3. The quarrel between Saudi King Abdullah and Syrian president Bashar Assad, which is nearing boiling point, threatens to be fought out in Lebanon, their main bone of contention. Both are sending quantities of arms and ammo to the Lebanese militias under their respective wings.

4. This week, Abdullah persuaded Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and Jordan’s Abdullah to boycott the forthcoming Arab League summit in Damascus. Assad is unlikely to take this slap in the face lying down. There are indications he is ready to stir up Palestinian terrorist groups for attacks on Saudi, American and Israeli interests in the region.

Standing close by for immediate action off the troubled Mediterranean shores of Lebanon, Israel and Gaza is the USS Cole guided missile destroyer opposite Lebanon. It was joined Monday by the USS Nassau amphibious warship and its strike group of six vessels carrying 2,800 marines, flight crews and sailors. US naval sources report that a third group will join them shortly.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report the Nassau is accompanied by the amphibious transport dock ship USS Nashville , the guided missile destroyers USS Ross and USS Bulkeley and the fast nuclear strike submarine USS Albany SSN 753.

While cruising off the Lebanese coast, this formidable US naval force is close enough to the shores of Israel and Gaza to respond to developing emergencies.

CNBC's Cramer confronts Clinton on ethanol fallacy in interview; 'Nightly News' admits corn is causing higher food prices.

By Jeff Poor

Business & Media Institute

2/28/2008

Finally, the media are connecting the dots and realizing the push for alternative energy is taking a toll on the American economy.

The Labor Department reported on February 20 that the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a key inflation reading, rose 0.4 percent in January, matching December’s rise. One of the culprits behind the spike – increased food costs because corn is being used for ethanol.

“Farmers are replacing wheat fields with corn to meet the demand for alternative fuel, but that means higher flour prices – and in one Pennsylvania pizza shop, more expensive pies,” NBC News correspondent Chris Jansing said on the February 27 “NBC Nightly News.”

Perhaps no one drew a stronger correlation between the politics of alternative energy and the rise in inflation than Jim Cramer in a February 27 interview with Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) on his CNBC show “Mad Money.”

“Senator, you mentioned inflation,” an animated Cramer said. “Half of inflation is coming from oil. The other half is coming from food. Do you believe that we should continue to burn food in this country? Poor people cannot afford what we’re doing with our ethanol strategy. We’re raising the price of the staples that they eat. If we scrapped ethanol, half of our inflation would go away. Why are we allowing the ethanol lobby to destroy the affordability of people who want to eat chicken and beef?”

Clinton, a self-proclaimed opponent of Washington special interests, provided more of a dodge than an explanation.

“Well, I think it’s a little more complicated, Jim, because I think the increases in the energy prices generally have contributed to food inflation,” Clinton said. “Although, you’re absolutely right – that the rising cost of corn and soybeans, which are ubiquitous in our food supply, have certainly contributed significantly, but we’re in a transition period.”

So what was Clinton’s solution? More nuclear power, as in France, where 76 percent of that country’s electricity is produced without greenhouse gases? What about investing in clean-coal strategies since coal is an abundant natural resource? Or perhaps opening up part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil drilling, where according to an editorial in the February 21 Investor’s Business Daily, our dependence on “foreign oil” in a global oil market would be solved if Democrats in Congress would stop restricting the supply?

Of course it was none of the above. Clinton proposed less efficient solutions, including two ideas popular with the green movement – solar and wind power.

“We need an energy policy that does focus on homegrown energy, and that has to be a broad base set of energy alternatives,” Clinton said. “You know, ethanol from corn is not the most efficient way of producing it, but it is what we are doing now as we move toward cellulosic, as we look at how we’re going to incentivize wind and solar. You know, I think we should be looking more at new forms of energy for our cars.”

Government-mandated corn-based ethanol isn’t only doing harm to the American economy on the inflation front. It’s also contributing more to carbon emissions and “global warming” than fossil fuels, according to two recent studies. That’s not exactly a “green” alternative energy solution.

Jesus verses Muhammad

Click on the picture above to see another great side-by-side comparison

Very important article from World Net Daily (props) called Jesus and Muhammad compared, I have made the comparison a bit, but this is a good side-by-side comparison.

If a computer acts up, the technician resets it to the default settings it had when it left the factory. If followers of a religion act up, one should examine the default settings the religion had when it left its founder.

One can examine the life of Jesus from the four Gospels.

One can examine the life of Muhammad from the Quran, Hadith and sources like the Sirat Rasul Allah.

The Quran is a collection of private revelations Muhammad received between A.D. 610-632. Conflicting versions were passed down orally until Caliph Uthman standardized them around A.D. 650.

The Hadith are stories about Muhammad passed down orally until Caliph Umar II began collecting them around A.D. 717-720.

The Sirat Rasul Allah, or "The Life of the Prophet of Allah," was written by Ibn Ishaq between A.D. 707-773 and preserved in copies by Ibn Hisham (d. 833) and al-Tabari (838-923). In 1861, Sir William Muir published an English translation, "The Life of Mahomet." Edward Rehatsek's translation, edited by Michael Edwardes, was presented to the Royal Asiatic Society of London in 1898. Oxford University published Alfred Guillaume's translation in 1955.

A review of these resources reveal:

  • Jesus was a religious leader.
  • Muhammad was religious leader and a military leader.
  • Jesus never killed anyone.
  • Muhammad killed an estimated 3,000 people, including beheading 700 Jews of the Banu Qurayza tribe in Medina, A.D. 627:

"The Jews surrendered and the apostle confined them in Medina. … Then the apostle went out to the market … and dug trenches in it. Then he sent for them and struck off their heads in those trenches as they were brought out to him in batches. ... There were 600 or 700 in all, though some put the figure as high as 800 or 900. As they were being taken out in batches to the apostle they asked Ka'b what he thought would be done with them. He replied, 'Will you never understand? Don't you see that the summoner never stops and those who are taken away do not return? By Allah it is death!' This went on until the apostle made an end of them." (Sirat Rasul Allah)

  • Jesus never owned slaves.
  • Muhammad received a fifth of the prisoners taken in battle, including women. (Sura 8:41)

"Muhammad gave command and the heads of the two chiefs were severed from their bodies. The scene of torture and bloodshed was hardly ended when Muhammad sent Bilal to fetch the wife of Kinana. ... He cast his mantle around her in token that she was to be his own." (Conquest of Khaybar, A.D. 628, Sirat Rasul Allah)

"The apostle occupied the Jewish forts … taking prisoners as he went. Among these were Safiya, the wife of Kinana. … The apostle chose Safiya for himself. The other prisoners were distributed among the Muslims." (Sirat Rasul Allah)

"Married women are forbidden unto you, except those whom your right hands possess (taken in battle.)" (Sura 4:24)

  • Jesus never married.
  • Muhammad had many wives.

"Anas said, 'The prophet used to visit all his wives in an hour round, during the day and night and they were 11 in number.' I asked Anas, 'Had the prophet the strength for it?' Anas replied, 'We used to say that the prophet was given the strength of 30 (men).'" (Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, Bk. 5, No. 268)

"Muhammad said: 'Woman can be married for religion, her fortune, or her beauty. So marry one for the religion.'" (Abu Issa al-Tarmidi, Sunan al-Tarmidi, Medina n.d., p.275, B: 4, H:1092)

"Prophet, we have made lawful to you … the slave girls whom Allah has given you as booty." (Sura 33:50)

When Muhammad's behavior is reviewed, Muslim scholars point out that King David was also a prophet yet he killed people, owned slaves and had many wives.

The response is still that Jesus never killed anyone, never owned slaves and never married. David only wanted a small piece of land – there is no Bible command for Jews to subdue the world.

  • Jesus never forced followers to continue believing. After Jesus made a difficult saying, "many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him. Then Jesus said to the twelve, 'Will ye also go away?' Then Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.'" (John 6:31-69)
  • Muhammad forced followers to continue believing, "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him." (Hadith al-Bukhari, Vol. 9, Bk. 84, No. 57)
  • Jesus taught God was our Father (Matthew 6:10).
  • Muhammad taught it was blasphemy to call Allah your father (Sura 5:18)
  • Jesus taught man was made in God's image. (Matthew 22:20, ref. Gen. 1:26-27, 9:6)
  • Muhammad taught Allah has no image. (Sura 42:11, Sura 112:4)
  • Jesus taught "forgive those who trespass against you." (Matthew 6:10-15)
  • Muhammad taught to avenge trespasses against your honor, family or religion.

"Narrated Anas bin Malik: 'On the day of the Conquest, the Prophet entered Mecca, wearing a helmet on his head. When he took it off, a man came and said, "Ibn Khatal is clinging to the curtain of the Ka'ba." The Prophet said, "Kill him."'" (Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 5, Book 59, No. 582)

"Ibn Khatal ... had two slave girls who used to sing for him and for his companions songs full of abuse of the Prophet. The Prophet's instructions specified that the two slave girls should also be killed. … Another (to be killed) was al-Huwayrith Nuqaydh Wahb Qusayy, one of those who used to insult him in Mecca." (Sirat Rasul Allah)

  • Jesus did not retaliate when violence was committed against him, saying "Father, forgive them." (Luke 23:34)
  • Muhammad retaliated when violence was committed against him, ordering the death of his enemies.

"Muhammad sent Abdullah to use diplomacy to gain an opportunity to assassinate Sofyan. Abdullah went forth, pretending to be on his Sofyan's side, and when the moment was right, cut off his head. He carried it to Muhammad, who was in the Mosque in Medina. Muhammad was so gratified, he gave the assassin his staff, saying: 'This shall be a token betwixt you and me on the day of resurrection. Verily, few on that day shall have anything to lean upon.'" (Sirat Rasul Allah).

"Ibn Sa'd Tabaqat reported: 'The apostle of Allah entered through Adhakhir into Mecca. … He ordered six men and four women to be killed." (Kitab al-Tabaqat, written by Ibn Sa'd (A.D. 745-845), Vol. 2, p. 168.)

  • Following Jesus was voluntary, from the inside out.
  • Following Muhammad could be coerced, from the outside in.

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued." (Sura 9:29)

  • A martyr in Christian and Jewish thought is one who dies for his faith.
  • A martyr in Islamic thought is one who dies for his faith while killing infidels.

"Narrated Abu Huraira: 'The Prophet said, "The person who participates in (holy battles) in Allah's cause and nothing compels him to do so except belief in Allah and His Apostles, will be recompensed by Allah either with a reward or booty (if he survives) or will be admitted to Paradise (if he is killed in the battle as a martyr)."'" (Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, Bk. 2, No. 35)

  • Christianity teaches God wants a personal relationship with each individual.
  • Islam teaches individuals cannot have a personal relationship with Allah, as he is transcendent and unknowable.
  • Jesus' religion is known for forgiveness and love.
  • Muhammad's religion is known for obedience and fear.
  • None of Jesus' Apostles led armies. A village did not receive Jesus "and when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, 'Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elias did?' But he turned and rebuked them, and said, 'Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.'" (Luke 9:52-56)
  • All of the caliphs who followed Muhammad led armies. (Caliphs Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Muawiyya, the Umayyads, the Abbasids, etc.)
  • In the first 300 years of Christianity, there were 10 major Roman persecutions, and Christians were fed to lions in the Colosseum. Never did Christians lead an armed resistance against those who attacked them.
  • In the first 300 years of Islam, Muslim armies conquered Arabia, Persia, the Holy Land, North Africa, Spain, Southern France, Central Africa, and invaded vast areas of Asia and Asia Minor.

Fighting is inconsistent with Jesus' example but not Muhammad's, as the Sirat Rasul Allah records Muhammad personally led 27 raids.

Jesus's teaching on how to treat enemies:

  • Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, pray for them which despitefully use you (Matthew 5:44).
  • Resist not evil (Matthew 5:39).
  • If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to them the other (Matthew 5:39).
  • If someone takes your coat, give them your shirt (Matthew 5:40).
  • If someone make you carry something one mile, carry it two (Matthew 5:41).
  • Forgive and you shall be forgiven (Matthew 6:14).
  • Judge not, that ye be not judged (Matthew 7:1).
  • Blessed are the peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Matthew 5:7).
  • Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not kill, but I say who ever is angry with his brother is in danger of the judgment (Matthew 5:21-22).
  • Treat others the same way you want them to treat you (Luke 6:27-36).
  • Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, whatever you do to the very least you have done unto me (Matthew 25:40).

Muhammad's teaching on how to treat enemies:

  • Infidels are your sworn enemies (Sura 4:101).
  • Be ruthless to the infidels (Sura 48:29).
  • Make war on the infidels who dwell around you (Sura 9:123, 66:9).
  • Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day (Sura 9:29).
  • Strike off the heads of infidels in battle (Sura 47:4).
  • If someone stops believing in Allah, kill him (al-Bukhari 9:84:57).
  • Take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends (Sura 5:51, 60:13).
  • Never be a helper to the disbelievers (Sura 28:86).
  • Kill the disbelievers wherever we find them (Sura 2:191).
  • No Muslim should be killed for killing an infidel (al-Bukhari 1:3:111).
  • The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land (Sura 5:33).

What motivates fundamental Muslims to violence? Where Jesus was a religious leader, Muhammad was a religious leader and a military leader, thus the effort to separate the militant aspect of Islam from the religious aspect is an attempt to split Muhammad.

The closer one follows the example of Jesus, the more peaceful is one's motivation.

The closer one follows example of Muhammad, the more militant is one's motivation.

If the attacks continue, Israel will invade Gaza and conduct large-scale military operations to eliminate the threat:

Israeli leaders warned Friday of an approaching conflagration in the Gaza Strip as Israel activated a rocket warning system to protect Ashkelon, a city of 120,000 people, from Palestinian rockets.Ashkelon was hit by several Grad rockets fired from Gaza on Thursday, a sign of the widening scope of violence between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza. One hit an apartment building and another landed near a school, wounding a 17-year-old girl.

Located 11 miles from Gaza, Ashkelon had been sporadically targeted in the past but never suffered direct hits or significant damage.

“It will be sad, and difficult, but we have no other choice,” Matan Vilnai, Israel’s deputy defense mister, said Friday, referring to the large-scale military operation he said Israel was preparing to bring a halt to the rocket fire.

“We’re getting close to using our full strength. Until now, we’ve used a small percentage of the army’s power because of the nature of the territory,” Vilnai told Army Radio on Friday.

Israel had tried using softer methods to stop the attacks, including a lockdown on the border between Gaza and Israel. That resulted in a breakout at Rafah, which took the Egyptian government several days to resecure. Other nations had pressured Israel to end the embargo or at least loosen it for food, energy, and medical supplies, but the rocket attacks continue.

Unbelievable… if you don’t know the history of Planned Parenthood

A book I highly recommend:

*Planned Parenthood's Racism

(Information compiled by Lynn K. Murphy, Life Research Institute, June, 1994)

Facts about Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood:

(Though much quoted herein is old, I will show later that Planned
Parenthood today vigorously upholds Sanger's philosophy.)

Margaret Sanger said about her 1939 Negro Project, "We do not want
word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and
the minister is the man who can straighten out the idea if it ever
occurs to any of their more rebellious members." [1]

Clarence Gamble, president of the American Eugenics Research
Association, said, "There is a great danger that we will fail because
the Negroes think it a plan for extermination. Hence lets appear to
let the colored run it as we appear to let [the] south do the
conference in Atlanta."[2] Under this policy, Planned Parenthood of
America hired a full-time "Negro Consultant" in 1944.[3]

The entire operation Sanger's 1939 Negro Project then was a ruse--a
manipulative attempt to get Blacks to cooperate in their own
elimination.

The project was quite successful. Its genocidal intentions were
carefully camouflaged beneath several layers of condescending
social-service rhetoric and organizational expertise. . . Soon
clinics throughout the South were distributing contraceptives to
Blacks and Margaret's dream of discouraging "the defective and
diseased elements of humanity' from their 'reckless and irresponsible
swarming and spawning" was at last being fulfilled.[4]*

In a 1926 speech at Vassar, Sanger said the nation needed to follow
the "drastic immigration laws" of 1924 with methods "to cut down on
the rapid multiplication of the unfit and undesirable at home."[5]

In a March, 1939 letter, Margaret Sanger explained to Frank Boudreau,
director of the Milbank Memorial Fund: ". . . That is not asking or
suggesting a cradle competition between the intelligent and the
ignorant, but a drastic curtailment of the birth rate at the source
of the unfit, the diseased and the incompetent . . . . The birth
control clinics all over the country are doing their utmost to reach
the lower strata [the minorities] of our population . . ."[6]

To stop this "multiplication," Sanger could be harsh. Her book, The
Pivot of Civilization, has a chapter called "The Cruelty of
Charity." In it she blasts as "insidiously injurious" programs to
provide "medical and nursing facilities to slum mothers." In other
words, Sanger wanted ethnic cleansing. Instead of helping the poor,
she considered them (particularly Blacks, Hispanics, and Jewish
immigrants) slum dwellers who would soon overrun the boundaries of
their slums and contaminate the better elements of society with their
inferior genes.

Throughout the 200+ pages of The Pivot of Civilization Sanger
called for the elimination of human weeds: "for the cessation of
charity, for the segregation of morons, misfits, and maladjusted,"
and for the sterilization of "genetically inferior races."[7] In this
same book she argued that organized attempts to help the poor were
the "surest sign that our civilization has bred, is breeding, and is
perpetuating . . . defectives, delinquents, and dependents."[8]

"Margaret Sanger is responsible, more than anyone else, for keeping
alive international racism. She played the attractive hostess for
racist thinkers all over the world. Organizing the First World
Population Conference in Geneva in 1926, she invited Clarence C.
Little, Edward A. East, Henry Pratt Fairchild, and Raymond
Pearl--all infamous racists."[9]

"In 1932, it the Birth Control Review outlined *Margaret's 'Plan
for Peace,' calling for coercive sterilization, mandatory
segregation, and rehabilitative concentration camps for all 'disgenic
stocks.'*[10]* In 1933, the Birth Control Review published 'Eugenic
Sterilization: An Urgent Need' by Ernst Rudin, who was Hitler's
director of genetic sterilization and a founder of the Nazi Society
for Racial Hygiene.[11] And later that same year, it published an
article by Leon Whitney entitled, 'Selective Sterilization,' which
adamantly praised and defended the Third Reich's racial
programs."[12]

Margaret Sanger and former Planned Parenthood President Alan
Guttmacher were both listed in 1956 as members of the American
Eugenics Society, Inc.

Today, Planned Parenthood vigorously supports Margaret Sanger's philosophies:

In 1992, Planned Parenthood's immediate past president, Faye
Wattleton, won Planned Parenthood's coveted Margaret Sanger Award.
The following is quoted from Planned Parenthood Federation of
America's 1992 Annual Report, page 13: "THE PPFA MARGARET SANGER
AWARD, *Planned Parenthood's highest honor*,* was presented in 1992
to former PPFA President Faye Wattleton. Planned Parenthood's
national leader from 1978 until March 1992, Ms. Wattleton exemplified
the courage *and ideals* of Margaret Sanger,*PPFA's founder."

Planned Parenthood also has a Margaret Sanger Clinic.

The Racism of Planned Parenthood today:

"A racial analysis of abortion statistics is quite revealing.
According to a Health and Human Services Administration report, as
many as forty-three percent of all abortions are performed on Blacks
and another ten percent on Hispanics.[13] This, despite the fact that
Blacks only make up eleven percent of the total U.S. population and
Hispanics only about eight percent.[14] A National Academy of
Sciences investigation released more conservative--but no less
telling-figures: thirty-two percent of all abortions are performed on
minority mothers."[15]

"During the 1980s when Planned Parenthood shifted its focus from
community-based clinics, it again targeted inner-city minority
neighborhoods.[16] Of the more than one hundred school-based clinics
that have opened nationwide in the last decade, none have been at
substantially all-White schools.[17] None have been at suburban
middle-class schools. *All have been at Black, minority, or ethnic
schools.*"[17]*

Planned Parenthood itself reports[18] that of the 132,314 abortions
it did in 1991, 23.2% were on African Americans, 12.5% were on
Hispanics, and 7% were on other minorities. Thus, the total
abortions on minorities is 42.7%. But minorities comprise only 19.7%
of the U.S. population.[19] Therefore, relative to population
*Planned Parenthood preferred to abort minorities three times[20] as
much as whites.*

"'There is no way you can escape the implications,' argues Black
financial analyst William L. Davis. 'When an organization has a
history of racism, when its literature is openly racist, when its
goals are self-consciously racial, and when its programs invariably
revolve around race, it doesn't take an expert to realize that the
organization is indeed racist. *Really now, how can anyone
believe anything about Planned Parenthood except that it is a hive of
elitist bigotry, prejudice, and bias?** Just because the
organization has a smattering of minority staffers in key positions
does nothing to dispel the plain facts.'"[21]

Full of Air

What We Need Is More Wind!

Maybe Bush Can Call Up A Hurricane.

Hopefully no hospitals were affected. Poison in our homes, defibrillators crashing… what are these enviro-whacko’s thinking!

Drudge Report (props)

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A drop in wind generation late on Tuesday, coupled with colder weather, triggered an electric emergency that caused the Texas grid operator to cut service to some large customers, the grid agency said on Wednesday.

Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said a decline in wind energy production in west Texas occurred at the same time evening electric demand was building as colder temperatures moved into the state.

The grid operator went directly to the second stage of an emergency plan at 6:41 PM CST (0041 GMT), ERCOT said in a statement.

System operators curtailed power to interruptible customers to shave 1,100 megawatts of demand within 10 minutes, ERCOT said. Interruptible customers are generally large industrial customers who are paid to reduce power use when emergencies occur.

No other customers lost power during the emergency, ERCOT said. Interruptible customers were restored in about 90 minutes and the emergency was over in three hours.

ERCOT said the grid's frequency dropped suddenly when wind production fell from more than 1,700 megawatts, before the event, to 300 MW when the emergency was declared.

In addition, ERCOT said multiple power suppliers fell below the amount of power they were scheduled to produce on Tuesday. That, coupled with the loss of wind generated in West Texas, created problems moving power to the west from North Texas.

ERCOT declares a stage 1 emergency when power reserves fall below 2,300 MW. A stage 2 emergency is called when reserves fall below 1,750 MW….

RIP Mr. Buckley

May “green grass … grow on your grave” Mr. Buckley, you will be missed!

With wit and dry humor William Buckley tells a story that I have emblazoned in my mind when I wish to grin. He talks of lecturing and having two questions always asked of him, the second most oft asked question is this:

“‘What is conservatism?’ Sometimes the questioner – guarding against the windy evasiveness one comes to expect from lecturers – will add, ‘preferably in one sentence.’ On which occasions I have replied: ‘I could not give you a definition of Christianity in one sentence, but that does not mean that Christianity is undefinable.’

Usually that disposes of the hopes of those who wish a neatly packaged definition of conservatism which they an stow away in their mind, alongside (or replacing?) the definitions of astrology, necrophilia, xenophobia, and philistinianism. Those who are obstinate I punish by giving, with a straight face, Professor Richard Weaver’s definition of conservatism as ‘a paradigm of essences towards which the phenomenology of the world is in continuing approximation’ – as noble efforts as any I have ever read.”

The Corner (National Review)

I’m devastated to report that our dear friend, mentor, leader, and founder William F. Buckley Jr., died this morning in his study in Stamford, Connecticut.

He died while at work; if he had been given a choice on how to depart this world, I suspect that would have been exactly it. At home, still devoted to the war of ideas.

As you might expect, we’ll have much more to say here and in NR in the coming days and weeks and months. For now: Thank you, Bill. God bless you, now with your dear Pat. Our deepest condolences to Christopher and the rest of the Buckley family. And our fervent prayer that we continue to do WFB’s life’s work justice.

Anyone who is a conservative -- especially a conservative writer (or even blogger) -- owes tremendous a debt of gratitude to William F. Buckley. He made it cool to be a conservative, and in the modern age, he made it possible to be both an intellectual -- and a conservative.

Here's what Morton Blackwell has said about him:

  • Those who came of age politically in the 1980s or later can hardly comprehend the influence Bill Buckley had on the modern conservative movement. He was, by far, the most attractive and thrilling conservative intellect for decades, and more than equal in debate to any liberal intellectual, as we learned on many occasions. Conservative students of my generation, confronted with an overwhelming liberal (and often unbearably smug) faculty, were greatly reassured by the knowledge that Buckley could smash the arguments of anyone on the liberal side ...

    To Save by Poisining

Ahhh yes, the environmentalist do-gooders saving us from ourselves by poisoning us. I realize they want to kill off a portion of the population, but to do so by introducing birth-defects into it? Very ogre-ish if you ask me.

New light bulbs can poison you

Despite congressional mandate for CFLs by 2012,

U.S. EPA says they shouldn't be used everywhere

WASHINGTON – Despite a congressional mandate banning the sale of common incandescent light bulbs by 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is warning that their compact fluorescent replacements are not safe to use everywhere.

The EPA says breakage of the energy-saving, mercury-containing CFLs can cause health hazards, especially for children and pregnant women, suggesting use of the bulbs over carpeted areas should be avoided. If bulbs break over carpeted areas, the cleanup may require cutting out pieces of the carpet to avoid toxic exposures.

Mercury is needed for the lamps to produce light, and there are currently no known substitutes. Small amounts of the toxic substance is vaporized when they break, which can happen if people screw them in holding the glass instead of the base or just drop them.

Mercury is a naturally occurring metal that accumulates in the body and can harm the nervous system of a fetus or young child if ingested in sufficient quantity.

For the Maine study, researchers shattered 65 compact fluorescents to test air quality and cleanup methods. They found that, in many cases, immediately after the bulb was broken – and sometimes even after a cleanup was attempted – levels of mercury vapor exceeded federal guidelines for chronic exposure by as much as 100 times.

In a new Maine study, mercury vapor released by the bulbs exceeded even those higher levels.

The study recommended that when a compact fluorescent breaks, consumers should get children and pets out of the room and ventilate it. It warned vacuums should never be used to clean up a broken compact fluorescent lamps. Instead, it recommends using stiff paper and tape to pick up pieces.

Some states require broken compact fluorescent light bulbs to be disposed of as household hazardous waste. Others ban disposal of bulbs in trash.

Talk-radio giant Rush Limbaugh weighed in on the mandated new bulbs on his program today, saying, "It is so, frankly, ridiculous and absurd that it insults my intelligence, and it worries me when so many people are so mind-numbed that they go along with these charades and make themselves feel like they're actually doing something to improve their lives. ...

"When you're going to allow a bunch of bureaucrats to turn over as much of your freedom as you have, this is what you get. When you buy into hoaxes and silly things that a little examination with your own common sense can tell you is not true – such as incandescent lightbulbs are destroying the planet, causing global warming – if you're going to buy into this tripe, then you deserve what you get. You deserve it. The problem is, we're all going to get it, too, because of people's stupidity. We're not going to have a choice to put compact fluorescents in our houses or not."

Thanks to pressures from environmentalists, sales are skyrocketing for compact fluorescent lamps. More than 290 million compact fluorescents carrying the EPA's "Energy Star" label sold last year, nearly double the number in 2006. Compact fluorescents now make up 20 percent of the U.S. light bulb market, and sales are all but guaranteed to grow – especially since a new law passed by Congress and signed by President Bush bans sales of common incandescent bulbs starting in 2012.

Compact fluorescents can contain from 1 to 30 milligrams of mercury, according to the Mercury Policy Project. The nonprofit cited a New Jersey study that estimated that about two to four tons of the element are released into the environment in the U.S. each year from compact fluorescents.

Soon-to-be released results of tests conducted by the state of Maine confirm earlier states' findings suggesting that under certain conditions mercury vapor released from broken CFLs can pose a health risk. As a precaution, states such as Vermont are now suggesting removal of carpeting where breakage has occurred when there are infants and pregnant women present. Other states such as Massachusetts are likely to recommend that CFLs not be placed in fixtures subject to breakage in areas frequented by sensitive populations.
